State Rep. Donni Steele (R-Orion Township) last week led the House in introducing a new and cost-effective road funding package. Steele, who chairs the Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Local Transportation, said the package will provide adequate annual road funding without any raise to taxes.

“Drivers will see no increase in what they pay at the pump, but they’ll see significant increases in the quality of our roads,” Steele said. “Our new roads plan replaces the sales tax on fuel so that one hundred percent of fuel taxes go toward road improvement.”

The new road plan will appropriate $3.145 billion each year, specifically for road improvement. The plan would solely operate using existing revenue sources, meaning new taxes would not be required for the plan to be sustained. The package also ensures that school aid funding would not be impacted by the change.

“House Republicans are standing by our promise to fix the roads without raising your taxes,” Steele said. “We’re developing solutions to real issues our constituents care about, and most importantly, without a tax hike. I’ve reached out to the governor’s office and am hoping the governor and the Senate will follow our lead.”
